Essential oils are the chemical concentrates of plants — distilled from flowers, bark, resin and leaves into intensely aromatic compounds that interact directly with the limbic system, the brain's emotional and memory centre. In an aromatherapy massage, the oils are diluted into a carrier and absorbed through the skin while their volatile molecules are inhaled, creating a simultaneous topical and neurological effect.
Lavender is the most researched of all relaxation oils. Its primary compound, linalool, has been shown to reduce anxiety scores in clinical settings comparable to low-dose benzodiazepines — without the drowsiness or dependency. We use lavender as the foundation of most of our calming blends, sometimes layering it with Roman chamomile, whose sweet apple-like scent deepens the sedative quality.
Eucalyptus and peppermint serve a different purpose. Their cooling, camphoraceous notes clear the sinuses, sharpen mental focus and create an energising contrast to the physical relaxation of the massage. For clients who leave feeling floaty and vague, a small percentage of peppermint in the blend restores alertness without sacrificing the muscle release.
Ylang ylang and bergamot complete the palette for mood elevation. Ylang ylang's rich floral character lowers heart rate and blood pressure measurably within minutes of inhalation; bergamot brings a citrus brightness that lifts low or anxious moods. Our therapists blend these oils to match your stated intention for each session — whether that is deep rest, energised calm or emotional release.
